YBCO

EUROTAPES
ASCG is participating in the EU FP7 project 'EUROTAPES', which aims to support European production of coated conductors.

YBa2Cu3O7-δ, or YBCO, was discovered to have a Tc of 92 K in 1987. This was the first time that superconductivity had been observed at temperatures which could be conveniently attained with liquid nitrogen, and so created great excitement at the prospect of low-cost applications of superconductivity. However, the difficulty of producing long lengths of high-quality conductors resulted in slow progress towards commercial YBCO superconductors; high temperature superconductors have yet to displace niobium-based materials in applications as a result of the high manufacturing costs and the form of the available conductors.

Members of ASCG have been involved with YBCO research since its discovery, working in a wide range of preparation, refinement and characterisation techniques – see the list of YBCO publications. Our current work is mostly focussed on AC losses and inkjet printing. As part of the EUROTAPES project, we are developing 2D and 3D multifilamentary structures using inkjet printing as a route towards low AC loss coated conductors, and supporting the industrial scale-up of inkjet printing methods.
